Mara Products Win Great Taste Awards Across the Board

Three stars for Smoked Dulse

In the UK food equivalent of the Olympics, Mara’s Applewood Smoked Dulse has won a Gold Medal.

Smoked Dulse was one of only 141 products to win the highest accolade of three stars, chosen from 10,000 entries into this year's Great Taste Awards.

Sensory experience

The judges described Applewood Smoked Dulse as “a wonderfully versatile...salt alternative” and “a really well-crafted product.”

Its ability to appeal to all the senses was notable, with the judges commenting on their enjoyment of the “immense flavour, wonderfully evocative aroma [and] beautiful colour.”

A clean sweep

Applewood Smoked Dulse - a dense sensation of smouldering umami - was joined by its sisters Kombu, Dulse and Shony, meaning all of Mara's products won an award.

Kombu and Dulse, which earlier this year won Best Artisan Food at the World Food Innovation Awards, both earned two stars.

Shony, which also came out on top at the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards last month, continues to boast one Great Taste star for the third year in a row.

An exciting addition to any kitchen

The unsmoked dulse flakes received praise for their texture, “a touch of fleshy seaweed contrasting with a great crunch of natural sea salt,” as well as flavour, “the length of clean, briny flavours is excellent.”

Shony stood out for its “fresh coastal notes” and Kombu was declared a “really exciting addition to any kitchen.”

Valuing flavour

Recognised as a stamp of excellence among consumers and retailers alike, Great Taste values flavour above all else, with no regard for branding and packaging. All products are blind-tasted so that the judges can savour, confer and re-taste to decide which products are worthy of a 1-, 2- or 3-star award.

Founder and ‘SeaEO’ Fiona Houston said she was “elated” to have all four Mara products recognised so highly.

“The team at Mara have become expert at producing the highest quality seaweed with the purest, cleanest flavours for our premium seasonings. I think those efforts have really been rewarded this year.”
