Mara Seaweed Wins Great Taste Awards - Again!

Mara Seaweed Shony, Furikake and Kombu powder Great Taste Awards winners

Gold stars for three products

As Scotland’s leading edible seaweed brand, we’re very proud to announce another year of Great Taste accolades for our products. Our hand-harvested seaweed blends Furikake and Shony were both awarded a star, along with chefs’ favourite, Kombu powder.

“Clever seasoning”

Furikake won its first gold star, with the judges describing our newest product as “punchy and interesting.” Available in Morrisons since last November, Furikake also recently won the Healthy Choice category at the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards.

Kombu powder won its first star too, recognised by the judges as “a really clever seasoning, with its broad minerality replacing sodium chloride (and MSG).” Discover what they mean for yourself: try Kombu powder as a healthy salt alternative on fish, homemade chips and in stir-fries.

Six years a winner

Mara’s unique blend of seaweeds, Shony, is no stranger to the Great Taste Awards. This year, Shony won its sixth gold star in a row. Also available in Morrisons, the judges praised the flakes’ balance as a “well rounded mix of flavourful seaweeds.”

Our founder and ‘SeaEO’ Fiona Houston said she was “thrilled” to have Mara products recognised so highly.

“The team at Mara have become expert at producing the highest quality seaweed with the purest, cleanest flavours for our premium seasonings. I think those efforts have been rewarded once again this year.”

Easy Bean Crispbreads with Mara Seaweed

Seaweed: the key to success?

We’re also delighted that four other products, each using Mara Seaweed to enhance their flavours, have been awarded Great Taste stars.

Dumfries and Galloway’s St James Smokehouse won one star for their Scottish Salmon with Honey and Mara Seaweed Dulse, whilst their Oak Roasted version won two stars.

Aberfeldy chocolatier Charlotte Flower’s Dark Chocolate Shard with Smoked Dulse was also awarded one star.

Somerset-based Easy Bean saw their new Chickpea Crispbreads with Seaweed and Sesame win a star. The innovative savoury crackers use Shony as one of their seaweeds.

Fiona commented,

“Congratulations from Mara to all at St James Smokehouse, Easy Bean and Charlotte Flower. We’re very pleased to see Mara in other award winners. It demonstrates the versatility of our seaweed and its ability to add outstanding flavour and nutritional benefits.”

Stars of the show

Last year, our products won a clean sweep of Great Taste stars. Applewood Smoked Dulse - a dense powder of smouldering umami - secured a coveted three stars and was nominated for a Golden Fork prize. Kombu and Dulse flakes each won two stars, whilst Shony achieved one star.
