Seaweed Flavoured Food & Drink Products Increase by 147%

Sought after seaweed
Mintel, the world's leading market intelligence agency, has uncovered a whopping 147% increase in seaweed-flavoured food and drink in the past 4 years.
As our taste buds become accustomed to the delicious taste of seaweed, and as people become more aware of its health benefits, the market has seen an impressive rise in the amount of consumable seaweed products available.
Europe steps up its seaweed game
This surge in demand for seaweed flavoured goods means that Europe is now the second largest producer of seaweed products, behind the Asia Pacific region. And the good news is, it shows no sign of slowing down.
"Consumer demand is mirrored in recent launch activity, as 37% of seaweed flavoured food and drink launches in Europe between 2011 and 2015 took place in the snack category, according to Mintel’s Global New Products Database (GNPD). Other top categories for new product development in Europe include sauces and seasonings (12%), bakery (9%), and soup (8%)."
Seaweed as a salt replacement in snacks
Seaweed tastes salty but is actually low in sodium compared to regular salt, which makes it a fantastic salt alternative. It also has the added bonus of being high in minerals and many other beneficial nutritional compounds that scientists are still discovering. These factors make it the perfect addition to food which needs a healthier, low-sodium flavour boost.
