Rise and Shine Granola with Shony

Healthy homemade granola with Shony seaweed

Homemade granola using seaweed instead of salt is a great healthy choice to start the day.

Makes 15 servings
Time 15 mins prep, 40 mins cooking

Most store-bought granolas are high in sugar, unhealthy fats and oils, and packed full of fillers and unnecessary ingredients. Making your own at home is easy, quick and allows you to control the amount of sugar. You can also tailor it to your own tastes.


  • 400g whole rolled oats
  • 100g dried apricots, roughly chopped
  • 60g unskinned almonds
  • 60g pumpkin seeds
  • 60g sunflower seeds
  • 60g dried cranberries
  • 60g raisins
  • 40g brazil nuts
  • 40g hazelnuts


  • 2 tsp toasted Shony
  • 120ml maple syrup
  • 120ml runny honey
  • 2 tbsp coconut or sunflower oil


  1. Pre-heat the oven to 150C.
  2. Roughly chop all the nuts and mix together with the oats and seeds.
  3. Gently heat the oil, maple syrup and honey in a large saucepan. Stir in the nuts and oats until they're well coated.
  4. Line a baking tray with baking parchment, then spread the nut mix evenly across.
  5. Put in the oven for 40 minutes, turning the granola over at least once to allow it to toast evenly.
  6. In a warm, dry frying pan, sprinkle the seaweed. Shake the pan every 10-20 seconds for a couple of minutes, until the aromatics are released.
  7. Remove the granola from the oven and mix in the dried fruit and seaweed while still warm. When it's cooled, place in an air-tight jar.
  8. Enjoy with yoghurt and apple compote or coffee-stewed plums for breakfast.
